Abstract

This research explores the future of humanity amidst digital transformation through the perspective of Don Ihde's philosophy of technology. Ihde emphasises that technology is an active agent that mediates and shapes human experience, rather than a neutral entity. Through concepts such as technological mediation and human-technology relations, this research examines the positive and negative impacts of digital technology, and underlines the importance of critical and ethical reflection in its use. The research method used is a qualitative method with a philosophical hermeneutic approach. The results in this study show that technology has penetrated into all aspects of human life, becoming a symbol of the progress of civilisation and providing many positive impacts. However, technology that is considered as the progress of the times also brings significant negative impacts, such as the destruction of nature due to its destructiveness. Phenomena such as global warming, consumerism, addiction, depression, and fear of missing out (FOMO) are some of the problems that arise from the uncontrolled use of technology. Technology not only affects the environment but also the individual's experience and personality. To overcome the negative impact of technology, there needs to be a discourse of change in development that considers all aspects of life, including the impact on the environment. An ethic of responsibility should be prioritised, by assessing the negative impacts of technology before its widespread use. This will help revisit the development paradigm and ensure that individuals consider the negative consequences before taking actions that could be destructive. Thus, humans can utilise technology wisely and responsibly, avoiding taking nature and other living things for granted.
