Abstract

The cultivation of Hindu character values in education is an urgent need in the era of globalization, which is filled with moral and cultural challenges. This study aims to examine the role of the Itihasa and Purana storytelling methods as a medium for shaping students' religious character at SMAN 1 Semendawai Timur. Story-based methods that convey noble values such as dharma, satya, ahimsa, and bhakti are considered effective in forming student attitudes and behaviors in line with Hindu teachings. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings show that integrating stories into Hindu Religious Education, along with teacher role-modeling and religious school activities such as reciting slokas, communal prayers, and discussing values from story characters plays an important role in the internalization of character values among students. Revitalizing this method not only enriches learning strategies but also strengthens students' spiritual identity in facing global challenges. Therefore, the storytelling method of Itihasa and Purana needs to be continuously developed as part of character education innovation in Hindu-based secondary education.
