Abstract

This research aims to explore the application of hermeneutic theory in Islamic religious education at Madrasah Aliyah Baitul Arqom and its impact on students' understanding of religious texts. Hermeneutic theory, which focuses on understanding and interpreting texts within social and cultural contexts, is used as a framework to develop more interactive and dialogical teaching methods. Using a qualitative approach and a case study design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis.The findings show that applying a hermeneutic approach—featuring interactive discussions and text study projects—has significantly improved students' engagement in the learning process. Students demonstrated better analytical and interpretive skills regarding Islamic teachings and were able to relate these values to social challenges in their communities. Despite challenges such as resistance to change and limited resources, this study recommends that educational institutions continue to develop innovative teaching methods to nurture a generation that is committed, critical, and socially aware. These findings are expected to contribute significantly to the development of Islamic education curricula in Indonesia
