Sejarah Perkembangan Komunitas Kristen Jawa Di Salatiga Tahun 1888-1953

Abstract

This article discusses the factors that influenced the establishment and development of the Javanese Christian community from the Zending activity during the colonial period in Salatiga. The background in this article relates to Salatiga as a military city since 1757, then designated as Gemeente in 1917, and the role of European settlements that supported the growth of Zending. The purpose of this article is to reveal how the development of the Christian community in Salatiga from the colonial period to Zending to the change in the status of the Javanese Christian church at the beginning of Indonesia's independence. The research method used is a historical method which includes the stages of heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results in this article show that Salatiga was designated as Gemeente in 1917, which significantly impacted the development of the religious community in the city, especially Javanese Christianity. The existence of Europeans in Gemeente Salatiga also influenced the development of Zending activities. Two influential Javanese Christian communities in Salatiga during the colonial period until the beginning of Indonesia's independence were the Salatiga Zending and Witte Kruis Kolonie congregations.
