Abstract

This research aims to explore the deconstruction of the myth of marriage in the view of Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism. This is based on a general conception that marriage is a commitment that provides happiness, living together and other beautiful things. However, it is different from existentialist feminism, especially Simone de Beauvoir, who considers that marriage is a tool used by patriarchy to oppress women. Therefore, using a qualitative method with a philosophical hermeneutic approach, the results obtained from research and in-depth analysis of Simone de Beauvoir's main work entitled ‘The Second Sex’ highlight how Simone de Beauvoir criticises the institution of marriage which she considers as a tool to make women subordinate. Simone de Beauvoir defines marriage as a social construction that reinforces gender inequality and limits women’s freedom. Using an existentialist approach, de Beauvoir emphasised the importance of individual freedom and authenticity in women’s lives, which is often hindered by the demands and roles imposed by conventional marriage. The research also highlights de Beauvoir’s proposed solutions to free women from the shackles of traditional marriage, including social reform, equal education, and fair employment opportunities. Through theoretical approaches and critical analyses, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how existentialist feminism can offer new perspectives in addressing gender issues and advocating for women’s liberation in the context of marriage.
