Komunikasi Budaya Hindu dalam Masyarakat Multikultural: Strategi Membangun Harmoni Sosial

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Hindu cultural communication strategies in fostering social harmony within multicultural societies. Employing a systematic review, it identifies key factors supporting and hindering this process, focusing on experiences in Indonesia. Findings reveal that multicultural communities, especially students, exhibit high levels of multicultural competence, characterized by strong intercultural awareness, skills, and knowledge (Pertiwi & Faturochman, 2023). This is reinforced by an understanding of local wisdom, such as the Subak system, which embodies the Tri Hita Karana values (Sudianto et al., 2025). Accommodative communication strategies and adaptive negotiation through interfaith traditions (e.g., kupatan rituals, Medana Tomb pilgrimage, Tota'an ceremony) significantly strengthen social bonds and facilitate value exchange. Furthermore, the Tri Hita Karana philosophy and customary systems like Dalihan na Tolu proved effective in maintaining tolerance and conflict resolution (Badrun etal., 2024). The identification of shared values and transcendent identities, such as religious moderation, also contributes to harmony. Key challenges include doctrinal misunderstandings, negative stereotypes, and resistance to dialogue. This study extends communication accommodation theory and social identity theory by positioning local wisdom and communal rituals as complementary mechanisms in the context of Hindu intercultural communication. In conclusion, effective Hindu cultural communication necessitates inter-religious dialogue, universal values education, and active participation, supported by conducive infrastructure and policies.
